Vol 7, No 1 (2023): Political economy of human rights regulations in Latin American business activity

Issue Description

Homa Publica - Revista Internacional de Derechos Humanos y Empresas of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (Brazil), the first international journal in Latin America to published on the subject, would like to invite you to submit papers for its next issue, coordinated by Professor Daniel Marín-López (associated researcher at HOMA) and Professor Laura Montaño-García, from Universidad de los Andes – Colombia.

The isue aims to bring together contributions from various actors in the field of Human Rights and Business, with a special focus on the political economy of human rights regulation in Latin American business activity. The field of human rights and business in Latin America has gained particular strength in legal, public policy, and civil society circles. Alongside the discussions in the centers of power in the Global North on the scope of voluntary and mandatory regulations to regulate and generate remediation mechanisms for affected communities, the emphasis from the South has been on how to establish within these discussions the serious impacts of political and economic processes that have led to the lack of protection of entire communities. Urban and rural populations that suffer the daily setbacks of globalization. It is therefore imperative to take a more accurate look at economic dynamics in terms of rights in the region. Hence the interest of this special edition of Homa Publica in viewing regulation within the deeper framework of the political economy that guides the region in the second decade of the 21st century. A period that begins with windows of opportunity for Latin American reformism while immersed in a convulsed international environment and with crises that settle in our territories in a particularly inhumane way (mass exoduses, climate crisis, colonial, racist and patriarchal inequalities).

Homa Publica, an open access journal, invites academics, experts, researchers, supporters, activists, communities affected by the practices of transnational corporations and all others interested in the debate to submit scientific papers on contextual analysis of tensions and conflicts surrounding business activity in the region, highlighting complex socioeconomic phenomena that exist within these contexts or that are on the horizon. Based on these reflections, they should inform or recommend the best ways to promote international political agendas (Guiding Principles and Binding Treaty), as well as domestic ones (labor, pension, tax and trade reforms) that involve human rights in business activity in Latin America.
