Abstract

This article examines the film adaptation of Mrs. Dalloway (Marleen Gorris, 1997) in light of the tensions between interior voice and public scene, arguing that the film reconfigures Woolf’s interior monologue through cinematic devices such as voice-over and flashback, which problematize both the commodification of social appearance and the performativity of gender. By translating the stream of consciousness into audiovisual form, Gorris not only mediates Clarissa Dalloway’s interiority but also stages the party as a social spectacle in which female identity is constructed as symbolic value, constantly displayed, negotiated, and subjected to social evaluation. To ground this interpretation, the analysis draws on concepts from adaptation theory (Stam, 2006), spectacle theory (Debord, 2003), and gender studies (Butler, 2003), combined with historical perspectives on women’s conditions in the post–First World War context. In this way, the article demonstrates how the filmic adaptation highlights both ruptures and continuities between word and image.
