ABSTRACT: In this article, an unpublished text is presented: the translation of the first book of the Aeneid, found in a manuscript housed in the Brazilian National Library in 1847. Beyond this primary goal of introducing an unpublished text by an important and influential translator, the aim here is also to provide a brief comparative analysis of this version with those published in 1854 and 1858, the last version of the Aeneid, published during the translator’s lifetime. Our analysis concludes that the later versions make modifications to elevate the vocabulary and syntax, rendering them less banal, and employ in certain passages of the text expressions that, compared to the first version, are closer to the original Latin. Finally, there are changes that seem to have been introduced to highlight the sound or rhythmic aspect of a figure that the translator perceives in the original.A transcription of that manuscript, presented with modern orthography, is included in the appendix of this paper.
Key-words: translation; Aeneid; Odorico Mendes.
