Abstract

The use of pesticides in agriculture is a global practice, but in Brazil it is a public health issue. In this context, the article seeks on the one hand, to understand and analyze from a human rights perspective the practices and dynamics of concentration in the global/local market for agricultural inputs and their impacts on human rights and sustainability and, on the other hand, to evaluate the adequacy of regulatory instruments for human rights and companies for this market. The methodology consists of a first, empirical phase, using methodologies and concepts from economic sociology to understand and evaluate the practices and dynamics of concentration in the market and their impacts, from the point of view of the required standards of human rights and sustainability and, in a second, normative phase, focused on the adequacy of some regulatory instruments for the inputs market. As a result, the article points to the insufficiency of normative instruments based on due diligence to face the challenges posed by highly concentrated markets, as is the case of the agricultural inputs market.
