Training teachers in first aid: impacts and challenges in the school environment

Introduction: Federal Law 13.722 of 2018, the Lucas Law, made first aid training mandatory for teachers and employees of basic education establishments and children's recreation centers. This highlights the need for teachers to be trained in first aid to ensure that they are prepared to act correctly until specialized help arrives, which can mean the difference between life and death for the victim. Objective: To analyze the performance of early childhood education teachers and staff using tests before and after first aid training. Methods: This research is characterized as a quasi-experimental, non-randomized study, with pre- and post-tests to measure changes in theoretical and practical knowledge on the topics investigated. Results: All the topics showed a significant improvement in the number of correct answers between the pre- and post-tests, especially choking, fainting and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) maneuvers. Conclusion: The research showed a significant improvement in the number of correct answers, which reinforces the importance of adopting teaching methodologies that integrate simulations into theoretical classes, in order to encourage the development of practical skills, safety when acting, identification of risk situations and knowledge of how to act in emergency situations.
