Abstract: If the oral genre of popular sayings is part of the extracurricular routine of students in Youth, Adult and Elderly Education (EJAI), how can we experience it in the context of literacy? This article assumes as its general objective to deal with popular sayings, using them as a tool to expand oral practices in the context of literacy in EJAI. Thus, we analyze episodes of workshops experienced with students of this modality, covering phases I and II of Elementary School, with the help of video recording. This is a qualitative study that uses the technique of participant
observation (Gil, 2008). We base this work on the contributions of Marcuschi (2010) and Dolz and Schneuwly (2004), to address the different oral textual genres in the classroom; Côrtes (2008), Xatara and Succi (2008), to discuss popular proverbs. The proposed activities made a significant contribution to the development of various reading and writing skills, which are fundamental in the literacy process.
