The educational reality points to a significant number of students with spelling difficulties with many errors of this nature in their written productions. Given this scenario, this study is part of a research that focuses on the appropriation of the alphabetic and orthographic writing system. The objectives to identify the spelling difficulties and their relationship with the acquisition and consolidation of the writing system, in students’ writing in the 5th year of elementary school. In this sense, we resorted to the theoretical field in which some authors manifest a view of the subject, of which Morais (1998, 2005, 2012), Ferreiro (2011) e Zorzi (1998). The participatory research, with a qualitative approach, produced the material of analysis and categorization based on the errors presented in the productions of students of the 5th year of elementary school, from a public school, in the region of Minas Gerais. It was observed that the spelling errors found can be considered as misunderstandings regarding the alphabetic writing system, which leads to the predominance of the alphabetic phase. Thus, the following reflexive points stand out: the recognition of orthographic occurrences, the understanding of the alphabetic writing system as a notational system and the permanent and concise teacher training.
