This scientific article presents an articulation of the History of Education as a thematic field of historical investigation with the theme of biographical history, through the analysis of biographical lessons presented in two reading books written by Ofélia Sócrates do Nascimento Monteiro. These books are Goiaz coração do Brasil (1934) and Brasília rainha do Planalto: história de Brasília para grandes e pequenos (1975), which were specifically written for teaching history in a regional context. Among the chapters and different types of textual genres, both sources contain biographies of men presented as illustrious, occupying different times and spaces. The focus of this production is on biographical writing about nationalist subjects, serving as repositories of examples, a bias of regional history, and the use of this type of record for teaching history, as well as initial reading and writing in 20th-century Brazil. To this end, the article is divided into the biography of the author and educator Ofélia Monteiro, a reflection on the reading book as a pedagogical artifact and cultural asset, and the problematization of the biographical lessons of male trajectories present in both materials, conveying values, knowledge, and protocols of behavior, considering that these are elite men with struggles triggered within unquestioned social positions.
