This article is the result of a master's thesis. The objective of the research was to understand and interpret how students from public schools perceive the public university. Based on open interviews, carried out with high school students from public schools in the city of Juiz de Fora, two main points were explored: (i) whether these students see the public university as a possibility and (ii) whether they perceive it as a tangible reality, as they perceive it. Since all the students interviewed were looking for deviations in the social trajectory of their families, as they were children of parents who did not attend university, two cases were chosen to delve deeper into the lines of the article. The focus was to understand the contradictions, strategies, and representations of these students based on the consideration that the search for a place in higher education in general and in public higher education, in particular, is a dispute between social classes for a comparatively advantageous position in the hierarchical social space. by different types of capital: economic, cultural, symbolic, and social. As for the results, the strategies and management of the schooling of children from two families and their impact on each student's vision of entering higher education are presented, in a vertical manner.
