Abstract

Historically, women have faced difficulties regarding their insertion, visibility and recognition in several areas of science. One of the spaces that has been presented as a powerful ally to make visible the struggles and debates waged by women regarding these issues were/are the cultural artifacts. In this way, the objective of this article is to investigate the meanings that are produced about women in the sciences, from videos that are constituted as interviews with women scientists and their respective comments present on the channels of the YouTube platform starring women scientists. As a methodology, from the search for the descriptors “women scientists, “researchers”, “women in science” and “gender and science”, on the video sharing platform YouTube, 10 videos were sectioned that present interviews with women in the areas of science. The analysis of these videos and their respective comments took place through Cultural Analysis. From the analysis of the data, it was possible to problematize issues such as the fact that the participation of women in science in the areas of STEAM is still smaller compared to that of men, as well as the fact that they represent the majority in areas such as biological sciences and health, but even in these areas they are a minority in prominent positions. It was also found that women still experience various fears, prejudices and difficulties when they are within the scientific field because this space is still seen as something that belongs to men when we think about the areas of STEAM.
