Abstract

In this essay, Michael W. Apple problematizes the current advances of conservative groups to educational policies, especially those aimed at homeschooling/homeschooling, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout the text, there is a reflection on some political-epistemological "dangers" and their effects on the contemporary educational scenario that, a priori, according to the author, are not being discussed with the necessary emphasis. What effects can such policies – closely related to business reformist demands – provide for schooling and teaching practice in the classroom? How have they mobilized practices of commodification/commodification of the school curriculum? The author also provokes educators and scholars in education, calling on everyone to "uncross their arms" in defense of a critically democratic education.
