What reading practices of books make up the process of schooling literature? How is the literary text approached by the teacher? These and other questions are discussed in this paper based on an ethnographic research conducted in a public school library. The data consist mainly of classroom observation, teacher interviews, and analysis of the notebook of loans controlled by the teacher. The analyzes are based on the concepts of literary education, schooling, mediation, and literary literacy, besides the notion of literature elaborated by Antônio Cândido. The results indicate that the teacher's mediation preserved the literary language, properly schooling it and involving the students in a dialogical relationship with the books.
