Textus quaerens doctrinam: the metalinguistic discourse and its relations to the contemporary knowledge about language

Embora se tenha feito de modo característico e por vezes bastante discrepante em diversas épocas consideradas, o estudo da linguagem data de muito antes do surgimento da moderna Linguística, ainda que muitos manuais modernos dessa área de pesquisa insistam em situar seu nascimento na Antiguidade greco- romana (cf Lyons, Robins, Weedwood etc). Para a ciência atual, na verdade, os textos antigos não apenas documentam sua origem, mas também servem amiúde como campo de prova de teorias modernas. Por outro lado, reconhecendo a importância de antigos textos gramaticais, por exemplo, a Linguística se mostra, às vezes, contra posições antigas, anacronisticamente tidas por equivocadas (cf Casevitz & Charpin etc). . Pretendemos, aqui, no âmbito dos estudos realizados por nosso grupo de pesquisa, pensar em modos possíveis de abordar, mantendo cabível distância entre formulações antigas e modernas, ainda que do ponto de vista de teorias mais recentes, fenômenos já tratados, mesmo diversamente, em textos antigos (cf Auroux, Baratin etc).
