“Não está escuro ainda, mas está chegando lá”: Crises globais, Serviço Social e resistência

Resumo

Na terceira década do século XXI, enfrentamos uma série de crises interligadas que ameaçam a própria base da vida no Planeta Terra. Estas incluem uma crise ambiental; uma pandemia de COVID-19 que se estima ter causado mais de 15 milhões de mortes em todo o mundo; uma crise econômica contínua; uma crise política, com o crescimento de partidos e governos de extrema-direita numa escala não vista desde a década de 1930; e a crescente competição interimperialista, com a ameaça de guerra nuclear agora maior do que em qualquer momento desde a crise dos mísseis cubanos de 1962. A partir de uma análise marxista, argumentamos que as raízes destes fenômenos residem na busca incansável do capitalismo global pelo lucro à custa do meio ambiente e da vida na Terra. A parte central do texto explora as três principais formas pelas quais a profissão de serviço social tem historicamente respondido a desafios semelhantes – conivência, conformidade e resistência – e avalia a contribuição que o serviço social hoje pode dar no desafio às forças reacionárias e na promoção de uma agenda que coloca em primeiro plano a satisfação das necessidades humanas, os direitos humanos, o meio ambiente e o anti-racismo, com especial destaque para as novas redes mais radicais que surgiram nos últimos anos.

Iain Fergusson

Iain Ferguson é professor aposentado na University of the West of Scotland, lecionando em Serviço Social e Política Social. É editor consultivo da Critical and Radical Social Work: an International Journal, membro do Conselho Editorial do International Socialism Journal e autor de Politics of the Mind: Marxism and Mental Distress (Bookmarks, 2ª ed., 2023) e Global Social Work in a Political Context: Radical Perspectives, juntamente com Michael Lavalette e Vasilios Ioakimidis (Policy Press, 2018).

Michael Lavalette é professor do Departamento de Serviço Social, Cuidado e Justiça da Liverpool Hope University. Publicou amplamente sobre serviço social radical e movimentos sociais contemporâneos e é co-editor do periódico Critical and Radical Social Work.
