Silêncio como linguagem em A resistência, de Julián Fuks

Abstract

This work aims to analyze one of the triumphs of Julián Fuks’ novel The Resistance (2015): its ability to condense, in just a few words, the complexity of family relationships shrouded in silence and held hostage by fragmented memory. More precisely, it seeks to reflect on how the relationship between the two brothers—the narrator-brother, Sebastián, and his adoptive brother, who remains unnamed in the novel—is constructed through silence and gaps that neither of them can fill. This silence permeates their lives, creating a series of unspoken truths that ultimately drive them further apart, while the gaps in memory, which appear in the novel as distortion and transfiguration, make it even harder for the narrator to achieve his main goal: understanding this adoptive brother and reclaiming a relationship—undeniably fragile—that once existed between them. The study also examines how the "resistance" in the novel’s title relates both to the adoptive brother’s resistance toward his family and to the narrator’s resistance in confronting his own memories and emotions.
