Abstract

The volume of adaptations of Hamlet (1600-01), by William Shakespeare (1564-1616), to the most diverse cultural formats is incalculable. In the field of fictional prose, the tragedy has been the object of study by adapters since the 19th century. This article aims to analyze the (re)construction of the identity of the character of Queen Gertrude in three narrative adaptations of Hamlet — Gertrude of Denmark: An Interpretative Romance (1924) by Lillie Buffum Chace Wyman; the short story “Gertrude Talks Back” (2007 [1992]) by Margaret Atwood; and Gertrude and Claudius (2001) by John Updike. To accomplish that, this study draws on the concept of adaptation, as understood by Linda Hutcheon (2013) and Julie Sanders (2006),  as well as considers the way Queen Gertrude’s image has been (re)created (Lefevere, 2007 [1992]) in these fictional narratives, understanding the rewritings as part of a broader process of reception (Willis, 2017; 2021) of the Shakespearian play in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Author Biographies

Amanda Fiorani Barreto, PUC-Rio

outoranda (2024-2028) do Programa de Pós-graduação em Estudos da Linguagem da PUC-Rio, com bolsa CNPq. A sua pesquisa em andamento busca explorar queerness nas peças de Ben Jonson (1572-1637). Concluiu o seu Mestrado (2020-2022) também na PUC-Rio, na linha de pesquisa Linguagem, Sentido e Tradução, com bolsa de fomento FAPERJ 10. A sua dissertação tratou da obra de Ben Jonson no sistema literário e cultural brasileiro, contemplando as traduções, adaptações, encenações e apropriações de seus textos para o português brasileiro, com destaque para as únicas obras do dramaturgo publicadas em território nacional. Previamente, formou-se em Licenciatura Português-Inglês e Tradução Inglês-Português (2013-2019), também pela PUC-Rio. Fez intercâmbio acadêmico de um ano na Universidade de Warwick (2017-2018), onde enfocou ainda mais no teatro das eras elisabetana e jacobina. As suas áreas de interesse são Literatura, Teatro inglês do Início da Modernidade e Tradução.

Leonardo Bérenger Alves Carneiro, PUC-Rio

Professor do Departamento de Letras da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), onde atua na Graduação e no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Linguagem (PPGEL), no âmbito da Linha de Pesquisa "Linguagem, Sentido e Tradução". Exerce também a função de Diretor Brasileiro do Instituto Confucius da PUC-Rio. Doutor (UFRJ) em Letras, desenvolve pesquisa no campo dos Estudos Shakespearianos, em diálogo com os Estudos de Tradução e as Teorias Queer. É membro da International Shakespeare Association (Shakespeare Institute/Universidade de Birmingham), coordena o Grupo de Pesquisa (GrPesq) "Por uma historiografia das traduções e adaptações do cânone shakespeariano", além de integrar o GrPesq "Shakespeare e as modernidades" e o GT da Anpoll "Dramaturgia e Teatro"
