Abstract

Poetic translation presents specific challenges that go beyond mere linguistic  transposition, requiring decisions that involve cultural, stylistic, and intertextual aspects. In the field  of contemporary literary translation, such decisions become even more significant when the original  text engages with complex cultural references. In this context, the present study analyzes two distinct translations of excerpts from a poem published in the book De uma a outra ilha (2023), by the  Brazilian poet Ana Martins Marques, through the lens of Lawrence Venuti’s theory (2009),  particularly regarding the cultural implications of poetic translation. Emphasizing the intertextual  and cultural dimensions of the poem, the analysis investigates the extent to which each translation  negotiates the tension between fidelity to the original poetic text and the demands of the target  language and culture.
