Abstract

We try to demonstrate in this work that Machado de Assis’s “monochordic” style allows na interpretation that is different from the usual one. It has been already pointed that this style represents a rupture with a certain type of illusionism, the realistic one. It is our aim, therefore, to show here the extent to which such style contributes to another type of reality illusion not in the realms of Realism: an illusionism à Ia Machado deAssis.
