Abstract

impacted third molars can cause several pathologies if left in the alveolar process. Its late removal implies a greater morbidity in patients older than 25 years. The use of panoramic radiographs is extremely important for the analysis and classification of the third molars, allowing the establishement of the diagnosis and preparation of plan of the treatment for the removal of these teeth. The indications for extraction of the third molars are varied, as well as the proper time for such a procedure. The placement of third molars can be categorized according to the methods proposed by Pell and Gregory (1942) and Sandhu and Kaur (2005). The objective of this study was to evaluate radiographs for finding the presence of the third molars and to comparison of methods for the classification of the same inclinations. In cases where there was removal of third molars, sought to identify the time when there was indication in the surgeries. Eighty panoramic radiographs were evaluated. From 80 patients with a mean age of 23.5 years, 50 had been subjected to at least one exodontia, as indicated by reason orthodontic, the largest number of cases. There was agenesis of 50 teeth in a total of 320 surveyed. There was agreement over 83% between the classifications evaluated.
