Abstract

Article on the creative character of Paulo Freire's pedagogical proposal, with attention to the “pedagogy of the oppressed”, indicating some of the relevant issues he had to face, discuss and overcome to support his education project as a practice of freedom in opposition to the conservative tendency existing at almost all levels of educational practices. Among these issues, he highlights the imperative of overcoming contradictions in the relationships between educators and students, especially those that occur in what he called “banking” education, and the issue related to the importance of denying noncontradictory representations of contradictions. It makes a confrontation between the belief in knowledge as an act of reproduction and its reality as an act of creation and what they represent in education. It compares and finds affinities of Paulo Freire's proposal with Bachelard's pedagogy of reason and imagination and with the pedagogical, liberating and integrative function of Plato's dialectic.
