We reflect about importance of Paulo Freire's thinking regarding the act of reading, in the context of cultural changes driven by cybernetics and the internet. Therefore, we analyze the ideas of context and development of the person, associated with the concept of reading, specifically present in the text "The Importance of the Act of Reading", written in 1981. We discuss the connection of the reading process with the discernment of the stages of reading symbolic apprehension and learning phases to be considered in the school environment, adding to these topics reflections on the challenges of reading development in the current context of cyberculture. Considering that, from a Freire's point of view, the reading process takes place concurrently with the constitution of the subject, due to the distancing of the object, there is a shuffling of this logic by the ordering of cyberculture, which structures precisely as an object those who should be the subjects . It seems to us, therefore, that the challenge of an education for freedom and democracy in the face of historical, political and social processes, in confrontation with the totalitarianism of the State powers, which contextualized Paulo Freire's thought at the time of his production, now it renews itself in the face of conditions imposed by a new kind of totalitarianism implemented by cyberculture.Texto do resumo em inglês ou espanhol.
