Due to the adoption of public policies to expansion and democratization of access to the Brazilian public higher education sector, like the 12.711/2012 law (Quotas Law), the social, cultural, and educational profile of the students diversified, and it stands out the increase of high school graduates. Considering the socio-economic heterogeneity that characterizes public school pupils, if they come from the federal, state, or municipal sector, it is important to assess whether these differences are reproduced in the access to the university. This article aims to analyze the characteristics of students at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, in order to identify variations according to the type of public school attended during high school. For this, based on the socioeconomic questionnaire applied by the institution, a descriptive analysis of the entrant's profiles from state/municipal and federal schools was made. Data of the period from 2008 to 2018 were examined, considering the changes in the public policies for access to higher education implemented in the period. The results indicate strong differences between the students according to the type of public school attended. Those from federal schools present socioeconomic advantages when compared to those from state and municipal schools. They tend to be proportionally younger, male, with higher income and parental education.
