Abstract

This article aims to identify, categorize, and analyze the main methodological approaches used in historical research on tourism over the past decade, contributing to the consolidation of tourism historiography. Anchored in the interface between history and tourism studies, the discussion emphasizes methodological plurality and interdisciplinary dialogue, incorporating perspectives from historiography, sociology, anthropology, geography, and cultural studies. The research adopts an inventory-based, descriptive, and analytical approach, grounded in a systematic review of scientific publications indexed in Web of Science, Scopus, Redalyc, Scientific Periodicals Electronic Library (SPELL), and the Tourism Publications Portal. The findings reveal a predominance of content analysis, descriptive historical narratives, and oral history/interviews, alongside less frequent but still relevant methods such as participant observation, audiovisual analysis, comparative approaches, and iconographic investigation. The study concludes that this methodological diversity reflects the complexity of tourism as a social phenomenon and highlights that, although selecting appropriate methods remains a central challenge for researchers, mastering these methodological tools enables new interpretations of tourism’s past and strengthens its theoretical and practical relevance within contemporary historical and social research.
