The present article has the objective to reflect on Gorgias’s views regarding the lógos and the phýsis in the Encomium of Helen. In this piece, the sophist presents four main reasons why Helen should not be held responsible for the war of Troy. We elected the three first reasons to focus on, for they seem to have been elaborated standing on assumptions about what would phýsis and lógos be and how the relation between these orders and man happens. Both appear to be able to impose themselves on humans. However, while phýsis has the gods as its agents and, therefore, is not subject to the judgment of the nómos; the lógos, elaborated by the soul according to a human opinion, can be judged according to the nómos as something beneficial or immoral based on its consequences.
