Aeneas in the Northeast of Carthage: Latin poetry translated to cordel

The present article discusses the possibility of accommodating the translation of dactylic hexameters to iberic traditional redondillas as a way of dealing with the formal characteristics of the Latin meter, particularly the caesura. Some treatments that this meter has received in the translation of classical poetry to the Portuguese will be reviewed and criteria will be presented to suggest redondillas as possible format for the translation of the hexameters. Next, the using of this pattern in passages from the Aeneid’s first book will be presented, in which not only the redondilla is the chosen rhythm, but also the seven-line stanzas, in a style adopted by Cordel Literature. Finally, the observed merits of the adoption of this structure will be pointed out.
