This paper analyzes the translations of the Bahian gastronomy lexicon in Tocaia Grande, written by Jorge Amado (1998), showing how the translation methods applied in Showdown (1988) interfere in the semantic and cultural loss or promotion of these terms under study. The research is qualitative and quantitative, based on Campos’ (1986) and Aubert’s (1995; 1998) theories. It shows that the role of the translator is extremely important because it may compromise the view of the American reader about the culture translated from the source language.
