Aspects of the Irish culture in the translation of the short story “The Boarding House” by James Joyce
Keywords:
Literary Translation, James Joyce, Comparative StudiesAbstract
This study aims to analyze and reflect on some of the options and choices of translation made by Hamilton Trevisan and Lucia Collin during the translation process of the short story “The Boarding House” by James Joyce (1882-1941), with regard to the maintenance of cultural aspects outlined by Joyce along the tale concerning the Irish society in the early twentieth century. These aspects were analyzed through the interdisciplinary perspective of the Comparative Literature and the Literary Translation Studies, based on Coutinho (2004), Martins (2011), Pagano (2000) and Santiago (2000). It was possible to identify more fidelity in relation to the original text in Collin’s translation.
