Abstract

Ethnomodelling proposes a more holistic view of mathematical knowledge by connecting the cultural (emic) and academic (etic) aspects of mathematics. Thus, the combination of both emic and etic approaches enables the translation of problem situations and phenomena present in daily life. This approach makes use of the perspective developed by members of distinct cultural groups. Emic approach is essential for the intuitive understanding of ideas, procedures, and mathematical practices used by the members of diverse cultural groups while the etic approach is important for the comparison, translation and connection to academic mathematics. Thus, this theoretical article aims to present a dialogic approach towards ethnomodeling that combines both emic and etic approaches and seeks a broader and more comprehensive understanding of mathematical knowledge developed in different cultural contexts throughout history.
