"This essay attempts lo outline the theoretical and methodological problems involved in the literary  analysis of female figures, and more precisely in the work of Machado de Assis. Our intention is to build upon discourse analysis an epistemological foundation that might be able to analyse these female characters without falling into the pitfalls that fiction usually presents to the work of literary analysis in general".
