Abstract

This study presents a comparative reading of the Book of Job and T. S. Eliot’s Four Quartets, focusing on the conception of suffering as a path to purification and spiritual maturation. The analysis adopts a hermeneutical and intertextual approach, examining how Eliot’s poetry reworks the biblical drama of the righteous sufferer, transposing it into the context of the twentieth century’s spiritual crisis and re-signifying its theological, philosophical, and existential dimensions. Engaging with the thought of authors such as Northrop Frye, Scott Hahn, and Erich Auerbach, the study seeks to understand how both works transform pain into an aesthetic experience, a fruitful silence, and, paradoxically, hope pointing toward a wisdom that transcends human reason. In this sense, the investigation aims to show that both in the drama of Job and in Eliot's poetics, suffering is not presented as absurd, but as a path to purification and metaphysical encounter.
