This article aims to analyze the character Míriel from J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy work The
Silmarillion as a symbolic representation of depression. This study is based on theoretical observations of
fantasy literature by Jackson (2009), Mendlesohn (2002), Silva (2008, 2017, 2018), and Gamble and Yates
(2002), as well as on manuals and guidelines of mental health professionals. Similarly, it is grounded in
Chevalier's (1986) interpretation of symbols in the analyzed work.
