This article starts from the concept of creating a new fantastic world in high fantasy, and from the idea of the hero's journey to study how the character Bilbo Baggins – protagonist of the novel The hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien – is presented to readers as an ordinary figure in a magical universe, and how his own adventure “there and back again” develops, in a journey that is not that of a great warrior or wizard, but rather – like the countless soldiers sent to World War I, including Tolkien himself – the journey of an ordinary hero.
