This article analyzes Gupeva: romance brasiliense, by Maria Firmina dos Reis, through the investigation of the relations between the mentioned novel and Caramuru: poema épico do descobrimento da Bahia, by José de Santa Rita Durão, in the light of Brazilian Romanticism aesthetics, in the context of production of Reis' work, and of José de Alencar's opinions expressed during the polemic about A Confederação dos Tamoios (June to August, 1856). Thus, this article demonstrates, in the nineteenth-century context, the relevance of the conscious retaking of a Brazilian epic classic.
