Abstract

This essay promotes a dialogue between the literary work of Aluísio of Azevedo and the urban space of the city of Rio de Janeiro, just when the XIX century discovers the meaning of the city, integrating it into literature. In the case of Brazilian literature this integration happens when French influence is strong in the country, however O Cortiço shows remarkable diversity of the naturalistic current led by Émile Zola.
