"Popular music": traditions in dialogue between Italy and the Americas

This issue of “IPOTESI - Revista de Estudos Literários”, v. 27, no. 2, of Aug/Dec 2023, issued by the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras of the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF), Minas Gerais, Brazil, seeks articles and contributions that explore contacts and dialogues between popular music traditions in Italy and in the Americas. It also welcomes contributions on the connection between music, literature, and the figurative and performing arts.  The focus of this issue will be possible relationships and exchanges between Italian pop music and different music traditions in the Americas.

Possible investigations may focus on the experience of such Italian singer-songwriters as Fabrizio De André, Paolo Conte, Mina, Ornella Vanoni, Franco Battiato, Edoardo Bennato, Francesco Guccini, Fiorella Mannoia, as well as many others, as all these artists incorporate into their texts and compositions elements from the literary and musical contexts of the American continent.

Possible inquiries may also focus on Brazilian singer-songwriters, such as Vinicius de Moraes, Chico Buarque, Rita Lee, Roberto Carlos, Zizi Possi, Anitta, Ana Carolina, and other artists who belong to this tradition, as well as musicians from Mexico, Argentina, the United States, and Cuba. Contributions to this issue of "IPOTESI" may also explore the soundscapes of these musical genres, and their ways of intertwining and merging.

In this perspective, the journal is open to research on the influences of Italian popular music in the Americas (and vice versa), both through migrations and through the relationships between composers, performers, lyricists, and instrumentalists. Finally, by interacting with the proposed thematic areas, it might also be possible to analyze the relationship between music and literature, on a formal, political, social, and cultural level.

The journal "IPOTESI" also has a section dedicated to texts on various topics -- contributions that pertain to the theme of the Dossiê, but that are nonetheless relevant in the field of Literary Studies. Contributions are accepted in Portuguese, Italian, English, Spanish, and French.

Editors of the issue: Prof. Dr. Pedro Bustamante Teixeira (UFJF) and Profª. Dra. Elena Santi (UFJF).
