Family functionality and quality of life of frail older adults attended at a reference center

Introduction: Family functionality plays a fundamental role in the well-being of frail older adults, especially in contexts of greater vulnerability. Therefore, the quality of life of this population can be significantly influenced by family support and dynamics. Objective: To analyze family functionality and the quality of life of frail older adults attended at a reference center. Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study with a convenience sample of frail older adults followed by the Elderly Reference Center in the municipality of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. Data collection took place in September and October 2024, using a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Family APGAR questionnaire, and the SF-36 quality of life instrument. Data were tabulated and analyzed using SPSS software according to the nature of the variables. Results: A total of 70 older adults participated in the study, the majority being female (n=49), married (n=43), retired (n=52), with an income between 2 and 3 minimum wages (n=48), and a mean age of 72.1 years (±7.5). Regarding family functionality, most participants reported high family functionality (81.4%, n=57). In the assessment of quality-of-life domains, total scores ranged from 41.8 to 59.6. The highest score was observed in the social aspects domain (59.6±18.1), followed by general health status (59.0±19.3), mental health (54.0±14.0), and vitality (50.9±12.6), indicating lower levels of impairment. On the other hand, the domains of emotional aspects (49.0±45.3), pain (45.9±28.5), functional capacity (43.3±36.2), and physical aspects (41.8±34.0) showed greater impairment in quality of life. Conclusion: Most frail older adults attended at the Reference Center presented good family functionality, which may contribute positively to some domains of quality of life. However, physical, functional, and emotional aspects remain compromised, indicating the need for interdisciplinary interventions that promote comprehensive care tailored to the specific needs of this group.
