Abstract

Introduction: Exercise dependence is characterized by a physical desire for training that results in uncontrollable excessive exercise with the presence of obsessive behaviors. In recent decades, exercise addiction has generated increasing community interest in understanding associated with compulsive behaviors such as eating disorders and body image disorders. Objective: Identify and synthesize studies on dependence on physical exercise, eating disorders and body dissatisfaction among endurance sports athletes. Materials and Methods: Using principles established by PRISMA in systematic reviews, searches were carried out for original articles in English and Spanish published on electronic platforms and databases PubMed, Embase, Psycinfo, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde – VHL and Google Scholar. The quality of included studies was assessed using the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Analytical Cross-Sectional Studies. Of the 1,318 articles identified, 16 met the established inclusion criteria. Results: Of the 16 articles analyzed, 14 presented associations between exercise dependence and eating disorders and two established a relationship between exercise dependence and body dissatisfaction. The most used instrument to assess exercise dependence was the Exercise Dependence Scale. Variables such as low energy availability, athletic identity, motivation, food addiction, perfectionism, life satisfaction, loneliness, depression, orthorexia, body dysmorphia, psychopathy, anxiety and stress have been shown to be risk factors or consequences of dependence on physical exercise, dissatisfaction with body image and eating disorders. Conclusion: There is a positive correlation between the variables exercise dependence, eating disorders and body dissatisfaction in endurance sports athletes. However, factors such as: modality practiced, gender, age group, instruments used and level of performance can interfere with different results.
