Contrary to Pier Paolo Pasolini, Mikhail Bakhtin shows a lack of interest in Cinema. Though there is no sign that Bakhtin and Pasolini knew each other’s work, they share a striking communality of thought. We can find a dialogic perspective in Bakhtin’s theory on the novel and on Pasolini’s theory on “cinema di poesia”. This paper focuses on the fact that both theories share characteristics of “free indirect speech”, as understood by Bakhtin and Pasolini. In Peirce’s terminology, this textual relation is “iconic”, based on similarity: it is a homological relation (genetic and structural) among non-verbal signs, verbal signs and the power of metaphorical view.
