Abstract

The Epitome of the Philippic History dates from between the second and fourth centuries of our era and is based on the historical work of Pompeius Trogus, from which its abbreviator, Justin, explains that he collected the deeds that could serve as exemplum. Bearing in mind that Justin’s version can be considered one of the most negative narratives about Alexander the Great provided by Antiquity, we analyze his representation of the conqueror based on the concept of exemplum discussed by authors such as Quintilian and Rebecca Langlands (2018). It can be seen that, although the king has virtues, he goes through a process of degeneration in the course of his conquests, so that his vices stand out. This process, which is marked by his geographical and moral distancing from Macedonia, will lead to him being feared by those closest to him and to his assassination.
