The aim od this paper is to analyze two suasoriae by Seneca the Elder (Sen. Suas. 6 and 7) whose theme is the death of Cicero. The focus of the paper is the contrast between the representation of Cicero as a public man and as a philosopher, which composes the image of a model philosopher and orator as the opposite of the statesman. The essential concept of this contradiction lies in the concept of constantia, identified by Petrarch in the late Middle Ages when he discovered Cicero's epistolary production, in which the Latin orator reveals his weaknesses and hesitations at crucial political moments of the Roman Republic. By capturing this contradiction and investigating the reasons that led to the idealization of Cicero, the paper addresses the construction of the image of the arpinate as a model of public man based on the production of Seneca the Elder in the environment of school rhetoric.
