Abstract

This paper gathers the Greek/Portuguese translation of three biographies of ancient doctors: Galen of Pergamon, Hippocrates of Kos and Sextus Empiricus, following the Suda, according to Ada Adler’s edition. We aim to display the three translated lives, followed by footnotes and compiled in one place, both Hippocrates and Galen’s ones – whose contributions to the development of medicine are notorious – as well as Sextus’ one, as he was also a doctor – although made famous by his skepticism.

Rodrigo Pinto de Brito, Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro

Bacharelado e Licenciatura Plena em Filosofia pela UERJ (2001-2006); Mestrado (2009-2010) e Doutorado (2011-2013) em Filosofia pela PUC-Rio; Licenciatura incompleta em Letras Português-Grego pela UERJ (2011-2013). Pós-Doutorado em Filosofia pela University of Kent- UK (2015). Professor de História da Filosofia Clássica e Helenística na UFS (2013- 2019); Professor de Metafísica, Filosofia da Ciência, Teoria do Conhecimento e Filosofia da Linguagem na UFRRJ (2019-atual)
Atua em pesquisas e traduções de fontes primárias nas áreas de História da Filosofia Helenística e Tardo-Antiga, notadamente Ceticismo Pirrônico e Estoicismo. Publicou pela EdUNESP três traduções de obras de Sexto Empírico em parceria com Rafael Huguenin (Contra os retóricos: 2013; Contra os gramáticos: 2015; Contra os astrólogos: 2019) e vários artigos sobre o tema. É membro dos grupos de estudo: ARCHAI-UnB (Filosofias Helenísticas e Tardo-antigas: recepção e dialética); GEFIL-UFS (concepções antigas de ‘linguagem’); Laboratório de Estudos Hum(e)anos-UFF (da Filosofia Política e das crenças); Diáspora Atlântica dos Sefarditas-UFS (as correntes e temas filosóficos que perpassam a obra de Abraham Cohen de Herrera); NULFIC-UFRRJ (ceticismo).
