The aim of this article was to compare the translation (English-Portuguese) of five idioms, which appear in the lines of characters of the sitcom Friends, in subtitles created by professional translators and subtitles created by amateur translators. The works of Noronha (2010), Oliveira (2009), Teixeira (2009) and Mccarthy & O'Dell (2002) constitute the theoretical reference of this article. The results showed that the translator, whether professional or amateur, must take into account the discursive context and have both linguistic and cultural knowledges to translate idiomatic expressions.
