Carnavalization in “Trimalchio’s Feast” and The Great Gatsby

In 1925 F. Scott Fitzgerald published the novel The Great Gatsby, the story of an obstinate love which drove the protagonist to conquest an immeasurable fortune. From this newly wealth and the spectacular parties that Gatsby used to throw at his mansion, the character got the name Trimalchio, which approximates the piece to Trimalchio’s narrative, inserted in Petronius’ The Satyricon. This paper presents some of the resemblances there are between the two texts and according to Bakhtin’s theory investigates the carnavalized aspect of the parties the hosts used to organize.
