Abstract

Music, conversion and activism among evangelicals

Abstract:

In the evangelical environment, different actors have focused on music to work with poor and peripheral youth and among those who focus on the defense of diversity. Considering musical activity as relevant in the evangelical environment, I seek in this article, based on qualitative research, to present the possibilities of musical practice. Conversion is one of them, considering gospel music, which has been recorded in the country since the 1980s. However, another is characterized by reflection about racism and gender, expressing a religious concept and practice. Both musical initiatives dialogue with religious conservatism, either by inserting other sound modalities, or by highlighting reflections on inequalities. In general, they end up favoring public tensions related to positions on religious boundaries. In this case, that modality focused on contextualizes religiosity makes explicit articulations with a scenario characterized by the use current categories in social movements, especially when discussing race and gender issues. This characterizes a position on minorities and cooperates to the understanding of the diversity of the evangelical environment in the country.
