Abstract

This essay offers a reflection on the importan
ce of "Preto velho" and "Preta velha" entities for
Umbanda youth considering religi ous intolerance and traditions in modernity. They are the
representatives of the historical memory of enslavement in Brazil and symbols of the black diaspora
in the Afro Bra zilian Umbanda religious field. Racism reaches this religious field in the form of
prejudice, discrimination and violence, which produces consequences on the religious identity and
subjectivity of Umbanda young adherents. These entities, in their different senses, can offer young
people symbolic instruments to strengthen them in their st ruggles for the positive recognition of
their religious identities.
