Stem cells in dentistry: dentists' perspectives on collection and therapeutic applications

Introduction: Stem cells have been widely studied for their potential in regenerative therapies, including in Dentistry. Their application ranges from the regeneration of dental tissues to the treatment of inflammatory diseases. However, the level of knowledge among dentists on this subject remains uncertain. Objective: To investigate the knowledge, perception, and practice of dentists regarding the use of stem cells in Dentistry. Methods: A qualitative, descriptive study was conducted with 87 dentists through an online questionnaire. The questions addressed sociodemographic aspects, technical knowledge, opinions on clinical applications, confidence in the effectiveness of therapies, and barriers to the adoption of stem cell use. Results: Most participants (58.6%) reported being aware of the possibility of collecting stem cells from oral tissues, although 41.4% indicated little or no knowledge. The most cited tissues were pulp from deciduous teeth and third molars. The areas with the greatest perceived potential for application included bone reconstruction for implants, periodontal regeneration, and dental pulp regeneration. Despite the positive perception — with 97.7% believing stem cells will be important for the future of Dentistry — only 11.5% had recommended collection to their patients. The main barrier identified was the lack of technical knowledge (65.5%). Conversely, 95.4% expressed interest in participating in training programs on the subject. Conclusion: Although dentists recognize the therapeutic potential of stem cells, there is still a lack of technical and practical training. Including this topic in continuing education is essential to expand the clinical application of these therapies in Dentistry.
