Abstract

Introduction: Extraction of third molars is the most common oral surgery performed in dentistry. The most used exams are panoramic radiography (PR) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Objective: To carry out a literature review on imaging exams (PR and CBCT) and their influence on the surgical planning of extraction of lower third molars. Material and Methods: An updated literature review was carried out, searching for articles indexed at PubMed database, from 2009 to 2019. Results: Despite being a three-dimensional image exam, which allows the assessment of structures in all planes, the CBCT has been increasingly used as a facilitator in the surgical planning of lower third molars and as an auxiliary tool in cases where greater precision is required in diagnosis, without overlapping structures. Conclusion: Some articles did not show significant differences between surgical planning in third molars with the different imaging exams, but there is an agreement that there are radiographic signs in PR that indicate possible complications in these teeth. In such cases, the CBCT can be requested as a complementary exam.
