Abstract

The text is entitled "An Educational Cave Story (On animals tha go to 'school')and develops an allegory of school. In this allegory, Jan Masschelein puts to the test reader's imagination with an educational fable that exposes the cave as an educational space-time, emphasizing the role of the pedagogue.

Author Biography

Jan Masschelein, Laboratory for Education and Society, KU Leuven, Lovaina, Bélgica

Jan Masschelein is a full professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, staffmember to the Laboratory for Education and Society. He studied Educational Sciences and Philosophy at the KU Leuven and at the Johan Wolfgang Goethe Universität in Frankfurt am Main and is a Fellow of the Alexander Von Humboldt-Stiftung. Primary areas of scholarship are educational philosophy and theory, critical and social theory. Current research concentrates on the (defence of the) public role and character of schools and universities, on the design of ‘learning cities’, on a contemporary pedagogical approach towards emancipation and work, and on “mapping” and “walking” as research practices. He has been engaged with architects/artists in the development of experimental educational practices and in the elaboration of collective experiments with students.
