This article approaches the subject of education for global citizenship, taking Paulo Freire's thought as a reference. Upon writing this text, we ask the following questions: how has education for global citizenship been debated in Latin America? What are the impacts of education for global citizenship on the educational policies of countries in Latin America, in particular in Brazil. In order to think about the concept of ECG in Latin America and occasionally in Brazil, we will build an argument based on the writings of Paulo Freire, a Brazilian educator and thinker who left us an important legacy on the possibilities of building a problematic, democratic and transformative education. In order to answer these questions, this article proposes to identify in Freire’s theory concepts that contribute, in a critical and transformative way, to social justice and education for global citizenship in the context of Latin American countries and achieve a state of the art of productions related to the theme of global citizenship in Latin America between the years 2016 to 2020, based on the database of theses and dissertations of the Coordination Higher Education Personnel Improvement (CAPES) articles related to the theme available in the database of the Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo). We defend a post-colonial approach that allows us to think about ECG from a Freirean perspective, overcoming a model that reproduces asymmetric relationships.Downloads
