Abstract

This article analyzes the flow and the fixed on the Calçadão de Bangu, in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Through interviews, observations and collection of photographs, the research focused on the production of everyday life from the living of this originally exclusive pedestrian street, inaugurated in 1991 after a plebiscite among the population. The Calçadão crosses Avenue Ministro Ary Franco and Street Coronel Tamarindo, on one side, and Street Professor Clemente Ferreira and Avenue Cônego Vasconcelos and Avenue de Santa Cruz, on the other. Along its approximately seven hundred meters, street vendors, motorcycle taxis, office buildings, department stores, pedestrians and bank branches accumulate near the train station and Bangu Shopping. This research highlights the assembly, disassembly and organization of the routine around the street fixed, such as the market stall, and the flows that intertwine the local daily life. I conclude that the ideals of public order and urban planning are often inverted and re-signified by workers and other occupants of the streets.
